Mr Leo Akah is both a Fellow of Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (FCIIN) and an Associate of Chartered Insurance Institute of London (ACII). He is a Lawyer (LL. B, BL). He also holds a Master Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Mr Akah started his insurance working career in 1988 with The Universal Insurance Company Ltd in the Marine Department. In 1991 after obtaining his Associateship of Chartered Insurance Institute of London, he moved to African Safety Insurance Company Ltd as a Controller. In 1994, he became an Assistant General Manager (AGM) at Oriental Insurance Company Ltd (owned by Enugu State Government). In 1996, Mr Akah was elevated to become the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Oriental Insurance, a position he held till 2007. In 2008, he joined First Link Insurance Brokers Ltd as Executive Director.

In 2009, Mr Akah joined the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) as Deputy Director Policy and Regulation. He became a substantive Director in 2018, and since then has superintended over various technical Directorates. He played major role in the crafting of several guidelines such as the Micro-insurance, Takaful insurance, Market Conduct, Corporate Governance, etc, that changed the face of the Commission.

Mr Leo Akah retired from the National Insurance Commission in April, 2024.
